Price your Thanksgiving dinner before you shop

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26. The list is long, the turkey ads are loud, and the store with the cheapest bird is not always the cheapest for everything else. Here is how to price the whole list at the stores near you, and which lines to read twice.

Price the whole list, not just the turkey

The turkey gets the headlines, but it is one line on a list of fifteen or twenty. A store with a low turkey price can still be the dearer trip once the potatoes, butter, cream and broth are added up. So price everything at once, at every store near you, and then look at the totals.

This is the starter list Cartworth suggests for Thanksgiving. Each item opens a comparison across the stores near your ZIP:

From three weeks before the day, the Compare tab of the free web app shows a Thanksgiving card with the same list and an Add all to my list button. Add your own extras (gravy, fresh cranberries, eggs, apple cider), then press Plan my trip on the List tab. Cartworth prices every item at every store you follow and shows the cheapest single store, the best two-store and three-store splits, and what the trip would cost if you bought each item wherever it is cheapest.

Add sizes, so the totals mean something

A list item with no size is priced at a typical package size from the results, and the plan says so next to each cost. That is fine for celery. It is not fine for the things you buy a lot of. Write the amount you will actually buy:

Cartworth then prices exactly that amount at each store, in the same unit, so a 3 lb bag and a 10 lb bag are compared fairly.

Read the turkey deal’s conditions

The lowest turkey prices of the year usually come with strings attached. Before you plan around one, check:

Cartworth shows these conditions with each weekly-ad deal, on the Sales tab and next to the matching search results, and keeps the price without the coupon visible too.

The unit-price traps on a Thanksgiving list

The same few labels catch people every year. The unit-price guide has all six; these are the ones this list runs into:

When to shop

Shelf price or online price

Many stores publish their prices only through a delivery storefront, and those can run above the shelf (what we measured). Cartworth labels every price as a shelf, online, chain-wide or weekly-ad price, and the trip plan says which columns are online prices. If you are shopping in person, keep that in mind before you add a second stop.

Start with your ZIP

Open the free web app, enter your ZIP, and add the list. No account, no sign-up. The iPhone app is on its way; everything on this page already works in the browser, free.

This page quotes no prices: they change every week, and they vary by store and location. Cartworth shows what each store near you is publishing at the moment you search, and it is a guide, not a guarantee. Cartworth is independent and not affiliated with any retailer.
